About this trip

Fisherman’s Trail, Portugal

The southwest Atlantic coast of Portugal has some of the best ocean scenery on the planet. There are secluded sandy bays along with dramatic cliffs and roaring surf. There will be charming guesthouses and fresh fish dinners along the way.  The dates are set for April 20-30, 2025, and this includes one travel day to the trail start, 7 days of hiking, one scenic cave day by boat and one travel day to Lisbon. We will stay at the airport hotel on the night of April 29 and departing flights could begin anytime on April 30.

The trail links small towns and follows a diverse landscape that includes peaceful rural countryside, cliffs and beaches. There is plenty of sand on this trail, some of it hard packed and some not so much. Unlike other international trips, be prepared to hike longer distances with most days ranging from 15 to 20 kilometres. The elevation gain will be minimal throughout the trip, allowing for a moderate but steady pace. Nearly all the villages visited on the trek can be reached by public bus. This offers hikers an option to skip a day, if required.

We will follow sandy trails, boardwalks and rural dirt roads. It is possible to hike this trail with good sturdy walking shoes in lieu of hiking boots, as an added bonus. On day 3, a short ferry ride will take us across the Mira River – a fun way to start the day!

The cost of hiker for this 10 day trip is 2975.00.This includes all accommodation, all breakfasts and lunches, transportation cost to and from the trail, all guiding fees and all applicable taxes. A deposit of 1000.00 is required by November 1, 2024 to secure a reservation.

Grindelwald, Switzerland

Grindelwald is located in The Jungfrau Region of the Bernese Swiss Alps and is considered to one of the finest mountain regions of Europe. It has become an important tourist destination of both Switzerland and the Alps since the golden age of alpinism in the 19th century.  Accommodation and refreshment stops along the way add much to the hiker’s experience. The backdrop forms part of the Jungfrau UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, in recognition of the extraordinary beauty of the landscape.  This is a 6 day hiking trip with 5 days of hiking.

The hiking will include a longer high traverse, alpine lakes, a spectacular waterfall and a visit to the top of Europe: The Jungfraujoch. We will gain access to the alpine by a variety of lifts including a steep cog train, a gondola and chairlifts.  Our accommodation will be in guest houses in the towns of Grindelwald and Wengen. There will be one lunch at a back country lodge. The trip requires a minimum of 8 hikers.

All accommodation, all tram rides, guiding fees, all breakfasts and lunches are included. Price per person is 2650.00 Canadian dollars. A commitment by October 15, 2024 of 1000.00 per person is required.

Your travel plans should include a flight to Zurich or Geneva, followed by a 4 hour train ride to Grindelwald. I will be waiting for you at the train station and together we will walk to our guest house. The dates are September 3-9, 2025.

There will be an optional sightseeing day on September 10 at Interlaken where we will take a boat cruise across the turquoise waters and visit lakeside villages for lunch and refreshments.
